Debuggers Write For Us
A debugger is a computer program used by programmers to test and debug the target program. Debuggers can use instruction set simulators, rather than running a program directly on the processor, for a higher level of control over its execution. This allows debuggers to stop or stop the program based on specific conditions. However, the use of simulators reduces the speed of execution.
When a program crashes, debuggers display the position of the error in the target program. Most debuggers are also capable of executing programs step by step, as well as stopping at specific points. Often, they can also change the state of programs while they are running.
This is the first in a two-part series that describes the implementation of debugging. generic Theg too first part covers the inner core of a scrubber; the second part focuses on extending a debugger to support a specific programming language: Go.
Implementing a debugging tool can seem like a monumental task. gdb, one of the most popular debuggers, has over 500,000 SLOCs (according to cloc); it’s not exactly easy to learn and read, and it has a lot of helper features that aren’t essential to the purpose of a debugger. Engineers don’t have to understand the inner workings of a debugger to use one, and for good reason: if we were to fundamentally understand something to use it, we would use very little of it. We are more familiar with the functions of a debugger: printing a trace, clearing hexadecimal memory, defining watchpoints or writing macros combining these simpler tasks.
